Reacting to SEO Subreddit Posts: Common Questions and Insights

In this video, I react to and respond to several posts from the SEO subreddit. I have a strong love-hate relationship with this community—there are lots of games being played, but also many great questions. So, in this blog post, I’m going to answer some of those questions, because if people ask them, others are likely wondering the same things. Let’s dive in and see what we can uncover together!

1. Impressions Drop in Google Search Console

A user posted: “My website impressions suddenly dropped from 160 to 9. My website is one year old. What happened?”

The problem here is that without sharing the website, there’s no way to know what caused the drop. If you’re experiencing something similar, my advice is to provide more details in your post so that others, including myself, can give proper feedback.

2. Canva’s SEO Strategy

Another post shared: “I analyzed Canva’s SEO strategy and found something interesting: they’re getting 700 million+ visits per month by optimizing for user problems, not just keywords.”

Well, this isn’t exactly new. The strategy of solving user problems rather than focusing solely on keywords has been around for a while. Many SEO experts, including myself, have discussed how important it is to create content that answers user queries and guides them toward the next steps. This is SEO 101, and while it’s great that Canva is using it, it’s hardly groundbreaking.

3. Social Media and SEO Rankings

A good question came from a user: “How does social media help improve website rankings from an SEO perspective?”

The short answer is that social signals, such as likes and shares, can have a small impact on your rankings. Google does look at social media, but it’s just one small piece of the puzzle. Personally, I don’t focus heavily on social media for SEO, but if you do post regularly and engage with your audience, it will help. Bonus points if you direct traffic from your social profiles to your website.

4. Shadowbanned After the December Core Update

A user shared: “My two sites were destroyed and removed from Google searches after the December core update. I think I’ve been shadowbanned. Anyone else experiencing this?”

Unfortunately, this isn’t random. It’s likely that the user engaged in black-hat SEO tactics or used shortcuts that led to a penalty. Techniques like buying PBNs (Private Blog Networks) or engaging in click-through-rate manipulation are risky, and Google will penalize sites that use them. If your traffic drops dramatically, it’s time to check Google Search Console for any indications of a penalty. Always diversify your traffic sources to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket!

5. Removing a Negative Google Review

A user posted a question about removing a negative Google review, saying: “I received a bad review that isn’t true, and despite contacting Google, they said it doesn’t violate their terms. What can I do?”

First, it’s essential to contact Google when this happens, but if they’ve already said there’s nothing that can be done, your next best step is to respond to the review in a calm and professional manner. Acknowledge the issue, and if it’s a fake review, state that you’ve never had a customer by that name. Offering a solution or inviting the reviewer to contact you directly for resolution shows maturity and builds trust with potential customers who may read the review.

Remember, no business has all five-star reviews. It’s normal to receive negative feedback, and how you handle it can work in your favor. When potential customers see how you address negative reviews, they’ll be more inclined to trust you.
